Discovering the Greenlandic dog

Origin and history

It is considered one of the oldest breeds in the world and for centuries it has been used by the Inuit for hunting and transportation. The Inuit are a people who live in the Arctic regions, in this case in Greenland, the island located in the far north of the Atlantic Ocean.

The Greenlander has evolved to be able to withstand freezing temperatures and is generally used to pull sleds. Of all the snow dogs, however, he is probably the  least known. Other breeds such as Husky, Samoyed and Alaskan Malamute have, on the contrary, become very popular for no real specific reason. Indeed, all of these mammals share many characteristics and peculiarities.

Due to its structure, stamina and thick coat, the Greenland dog is able to withstand weather conditions typical of the Arctic zone, as and more than the breeds mentioned above. Indeed, over the years, it has shown great resistance to cold and humidity.

Physical characteristics

Its head has a rather round shape, although in the upper part it is slightly arched. The space between the ears is very large and these are straight and rounded towards the tip.

Their eyes are round, but with a slight almond shape at the tip, without being sunken nor too prominent. Indeed, they give this dog a deep and mysterious air, yet friendly at the same time . His nose is elongated and his hair is white, although with age it tends to darken. It features a straight and wide shape, which together with its darker color attracts attention. The nostrils are chocolate-colored, almost black.

As for its measures, it can reach between 60 and 68 centimeters in height  at the withers, in the case of males. The females, shorter, oscillate between 55 and 61 cm. Its weight varies between 28 and 32 kilos, depending on the gender.

His chest is deep and strong, his back is straight, and his overall appearance denotes strength and endurance. Its legs are regular, equipped with powerful muscles and strong bones. Their feet are characteristic, as they appear thicker, in proportion to the rest of the body.

Finally, the Greenlander has two layers of hair: a soft, inner one, and a denser and smoother outer one. The colors allowed for this breed are different, but they are distinguished by a white spot on the chest that must never be missing. Although most of these shades follow the brown line (sand, cinnamon, earth, beige …), sometimes even the black color can be admitted.

Character and temperament of the Greenland dog

This dog has a feature that is very common to some Japanese breeds: it does not bark. His way of communicating is through howls, which will be different if what he wants to convey is pain or joy. Think that the inhabitants of Greenland called these howls: ” wild cry “.

He is also austere, which is one of the main defining characteristics of his personality. When you make him work, he never backs down: he will achieve his goal at any cost.

Specific care for the Greenlandic dog

In addition to being a very hardy and strong mammal, it also possesses excellent health. He does not suffer from common or congenital diseases. All he needs is adequate physical activity, because that’s what his genes require. It is therefore suitable for very active people who love to play sports.

You will have to brush it continuously to remove dead cells and hair. Since its fur is very thick, it will be necessary to check for ticks, fleas and other parasites.

Despite having always been considered a working dog, the Greenland dog is a companion animal that really doesn’t lack for anything. If you wish to have a tenacious four-legged friend with the disposition of a true wolf, you can adopt a Greenlander.
