Sweaters for black dogs looking for home

Many times for a dog who spends his days in a kennel, it is not easy to find a family to adopt him. Moreover, for some animals, due to their characteristics, it is even more difficult to achieve this goal. This is the case, for example, with dark-haired dogs. In an attempt to subvert this situation, a group of Scottish volunteers weaves colorful sweaters for the black dogs looking for a home.

Members of the Scottish SPCA, an organization that helps abandoned animals, say that, in general, it is more difficult for dark-colored dogs to be adopted, regardless of the breed of the animal.

It is a clear fact that lighter-haired dogs find a new human family more quickly.

This phenomenon is known as the “black dog syndrome”. Apparently, the dark color makes it more difficult to observe the facial expressions and other characteristics of the animal. The situation worsens if those who want to adopt the dog, look at the photos on the internet.

An initiative for black-haired dogs to find a family

In order for black-haired dogs looking for homes to find people willing to adopt them first, the Scottish SPCA has decided to help these adorable pets. How did he do it? They dressed them in colorful sweaters woven by volunteers from the Scottish Women’s Institute (SWI), summoned for this solidarity task.

The idea is that dogs, sporting these cute multicolored sweaters, attract people’s attention.  In this way, by observing them more carefully, people can discover the goodness of these animals and their good looks.

All initiatives that help abandoned animals to be adopted are always welcome. We hope, therefore, that these Scottish dogs, of whatever color they are, will soon enjoy the joy of a home in which to be loved and cared for.

The idea is also to make these sweaters a topic of conversation, so that more people can decide to include an animal in their life.

What are the risks of not adopting dark-haired dogs?

Strange as it may seem, “black dog syndrome” affects numerous kennels, full of animals waiting to be adopted.

The truth is, many people ignore dark-haired animals, regardless of their race, gender and age.

In many kennels, animals are eventually  sacrificed after spending a long time without being adopted. Many become real veterans.

The danger of this syndrome, therefore, is that the animal is sacrificed because no one wanted to adopt it.

Among the explanations proposed to understand why black dogs have more difficulty finding a new family, there is the fact that they present a more threatening aspect than they actually are. Added to this are the superstitions associated with animals of this color, still strongly present in some people.

Black prevents us from seeing that this darkness hides a sweet dog waiting to give and receive affection. Moreover, since these animals usually also have dark eyes, some people have difficulty in discerning, for example, the state of mind of the animal. This obviously complicates the human-dog connection that is established through the gaze.

On the other hand, the dark color does not allow you to take a photo of the animal that honors all its virtues, both physical and spiritual.
