Here Is The Dog That Finds Poisons In Parks

Here is the dog that finds poisons in parks

Dogs are truly intelligent and sensitive animals . For this reason, for decades man has learned to exploit its qualities. Today there are police dogs, specimens used to find explosives, drugs and dirty money or, again, to find people victims of natural disasters. This time we tell you the story of Albatros, the dog that finds poisons in parks.

A hero against poisons in the parks

Albatros is a beautiful Border Collie dog, widely recognized as  one of the smartest dogs in the world. The protagonist of this wonderful news lived for many months like a stray dog. In disarray and at the mercy of bad weather.

Fortunately, it was found by staff from the Municipal Animal Protection Office of the Municipality of Zaragoza, Spain. The official Alfonso Martinez took care of him. In those days he was dealing with a terrible plague, poisons in parks. A sad reality that affects violent and irresponsible people who hate dogs. They hide various types of poisons in the public vegetation which, ingested by our four-legged friends, cause their death after long hours or days of suffering.

Well, Mr. Martinez and his staff could not find a suitable dog for training in detecting such poisons. The arrival of Albatros radically changed the situation. Being a very intelligent, restless and nervous dog, it is practically perfect for effectively carrying out anti-poison remediation operations .

This hero dog was abandoned in 2014 by his owners. He was just 3 years old and, probably, the decision to leave him to his fate was a consequence of his hyperactive and lively character.

Compared to other specimens and breeds, Albatros responded very positively to training. The goal was to teach the animal to recognize poisons in parks. Often and willingly, these dog killers hide poisonous substances  inside meatballs or other food in order to entice any dog to eat them.

Alfonso Martinez worked with the Border Collie for about six months, managing to turn this important remediation work into a simple game.

Today, Albatros saves scores of other dogs’ lives, thanks to his powerful sense of smell and training. As soon as it detects or discovers a possible poison, it  lies down and remains motionless, without touching the poisoned food. As a reward, he receives his favorite ball to play with.

An important task that becomes a game

Whenever our Border Collie prepares for action, he is equipped with a special vest. For him, the moment of dressing is like a party, because he understands that another day of games and walks in the parks begins .

Alfonso and his dog carry out a check of two or three districts of Zaragoza a day, carrying out anti-poison searches in a random way. If a park is ‘clean’, i.e. free from poison, a fake bait is placed in order to make Albatros happy.

However, your trainer recognizes that this is not an easy task. In the Spanish city there are over 200 green areas to control and the work is simplified only thanks to the complaints that come from the citizens themselves.

A new colleague for Albatros

Unfortunately, however, human wickedness does not lack a certain creative gift. In addition to poisons, in fact, meatballs or food are often hidden with nails or other pointed elements inside. Imagine the pain a puppy can feel when swallowing one of these items. In addition, obviously, to the possible health complications and possible lethal consequences.

Albatros is a phenomenon with the sense of smell against poisons in parks. However, for this other type of threat, he can do nothing. Hence, the Zaragoza Animal Protection Office has decided to activate a second training program.

Very soon, in short, our hero will be able to count on the collaboration and the company of a new colleague. Together, they will continue to save the lives of other dogs. In addition, they will be able to keep company and play.

This beautiful story becomes even more exciting if we consider that this dog, until a few months ago, was a simple stray destined for who knows what sad end. The hard training and the incredible results that Albatros obtains, every day, have earned him a series of important awards and recognitions.

The Order of Veterinarians of the Province of Zaragoza awarded this dog a prestigious distinction, greeted by the recognition of illustrious and famous institutions and personalities. He was also awarded the Zarapeluda prize , one of the most famous in Spain, against the mistreatment of animals.

The note that accompanied this umpteenth recognition is an excellent summary of the role of this true four-legged hero : ” Alabatrox has become the guardian angel of all the dogs in the city and the defender of legality in our parks “.
