English springer spaniel: nutrition and care

The English springer spaniel is a very affectionate breed, active and “indifferent” to commands. In this article we introduce this beautiful spaniel dog.

History of the English springer spaniel

The exact origins of the English springer spaniel are unknown; nevertheless it is probable that they date back to the 16th century like the other breeds with white and red fur, for example the cocker spaniels. At that time many hunters in Britain had spaniel dogs that accompanied them during the hunt.

The English springer spaniel is featured in various 18th century books and documents, but it was several years before this breed was recognized. The kennel club only approved its entry in 1902.

He was later brought to the United States and recognized by the American club. During the First World War the breed was on the verge of extinction, but thanks to the work of breeders between the 1920s and 1930s its population increased and the purity of the breed was thus guaranteed.

Characteristics of the English springer spaniel

The English Springer Spaniel is a dog with strong and long legs. It reaches an average height of about 45 centimeters and its weight fluctuates between 15 and 20 kilograms.

The coat of this breed is of two colors: white and red. The spots can appear indiscriminately in any area; all the specimens, however, have red ears, sides of the face and eye contour.

The coat is short, but thick, and very dense in the ears, belly and neck. All specimens are cut off their tails when they are puppies.

Character of the English springer spaniel

It is a very active, affectionate and loyal dog : it shows affection for its owners, especially for children. He can accept other animals in the house, but he is generally reserved in the presence of people he does not know. In this case it is usual to bark to defend the territory.

Although it is a very alert dog, it can be somewhat stubborn and refuse to obey certain commands given by its owner. Early education is key, as is positive reinforcement through rewards.

Diet and treatment

An English springer spaniel must be fed according to their size and specific needs. This breed tends to eat very quickly which is why it may be a good idea to place the bowl in an elevated position to avoid food blockages in the stomach or the fatal condition known as gastric torsion.

Being a hunting breed, physical activity cannot be missing from its routine. Daily walks are vital, but he also loves greater efforts such as running or accompanying the owner who rides a bicycle.

Some English springer spaniels can suffer from hip dysplasia during the last few years of their life (they can live between 12 and 14 years). In addition to this, they are sensitive to various disorders affecting the cornea and eyelids; glaucoma occurs in old age and is irreversible.

Due to their shape and weight, this spaniel dog’s ears tend to accumulate dirt in their ears, thus causing infections. Adequate hygiene is therefore necessary. Finally, due to the type of hair, it is recommended to comb it every two or three days, especially if it comes out and gets dirty.

If you are looking for a faithful friend to accompany you to exercise and always be by your side around the house, an English Springer Spaniel is ideal.
