Pets: The Importance Of Being Responsible Owners

The positive influence of pets on human health and well-being is well known. Don’t you think it’s time to return the favor?
Pets: the importance of being responsible owners

In recent years, pets are increasingly present in our lives. By now, they are part of society, as they accompany humans almost everywhere and contribute to their daily well-being. For this reason, it is important to promote responsible pet ownership.

Globally, there is no specific regulation on the welfare of pets and pets. Therefore, countries need to work to regulate this sector. This is where institutions should come into play to develop strategies that can regulate responsible pet ownership and ownership.

The importance of government work for responsible pet ownership

In general, the institutions of the various countries that have expertise in agriculture and livestock devote great efforts to this type of purpose. For example, by proposing laws that regulate the trade and responsible ownership of pets such as dogs and cats; which are the most common pets in Western culture.

Unfortunately, these bills do not always come true because they do not have sufficient support from the competent bodies. However, they are important because they allow to raise public awareness and open a debate on the subject. This does not always lead to a real law, but it allows for other types of non-legislative actions that can be useful.

One example is the ratification of the European Convention for the protection of companion animals by several European countries. Having a consensus at the state level allows administrations to develop and coordinate actions in this area.

The objective of the campaigns carried out by the public administration

There are two key aspects that enhance the relevance of these campaigns:

  • On the one hand, the focus is not only on the possession of the animal, but also on the steps prior to adoption. That is, they try to instill responsibility in the citizen even before adopting a pet.
  • On the other hand, the figure of the veterinarian is valued as a reference figure for any questions or problems that may arise.

What should be the content of a responsible pet ownership campaign?

First of all, the various campaigns must have a general objective: to promote a change of attitude in the relationship between people and pets. This will only be possible through knowledge and implementation of the basic principles of responsible ownership. Here are some of them:

    1. The first thing to do is to reflect on the choice of having a pet. Adopting a pet brings a number of benefits for the owner, but also great responsibilities. Sometimes, even if it can weigh on us, the most responsible choice is to not have pets.
    2. It is important to choose an animal that meets the owner’s needs and is compatible with his lifestyle. You need to choose an animal whose care is compatible with the time you can devote to it. Once the species has been chosen, some aspects must be taken into consideration such as the size, temperament and age of the animal.
    3. It is always best to buy a pet from certified breeders. This guarantees us that the animal is in good health. Buying a pet through other channels without following the regulations could subsidize the illegal trafficking of pets.
    4. It is necessary to know the needs of the species: the type of feeding, housing needs, how to educate the animal, care for its health, etc.
    5. Finally, it is necessary to know and respect the rules of coexistence present in society. Responsible ownership is a concept that goes beyond the relationship between the owner and his pet; since they both live in society. For this reason, the laws in force must be taken into account.

The importance of being responsible bosses

The participation of administrations in raising awareness of the population is the secret to obtaining any kind of improvement. The promotion of awareness campaigns is an important aspect to improve the welfare of companion animals. In this way, for example, even before buying animals, future owners will be aware that it is better to turn to certified and guaranteed facilities instead of looking for animals through channels that are not really legal.

This is why, in order to achieve the objectives, the collaboration of administrations and citizens is necessary. If both parties undertake to make everyone understand the importance of being responsible masters, concrete results will be obtained that will have an effect on this generation and on those to come.
