8 tricks to clean your dog's ears

The importance of hearing hygiene in your dog should never be underestimated . In fact, dirt and bacteria can accumulate in the ears, causing infections and bad odors. For this reason, in this article we will talk about how to take care of cleaning your dog’s ears, to avoid problems and prevent minor ailments with a few tricks and a series of  useful tips and tricks.

How to clean your dog’s ears?

Some owners are afraid of harming their pet or simply do not find it pleasant to take care of their dog’s auditory cleansing. You can then contact the veterinarian or centers that perform the  grooming of your four-legged friend. A choice that can be  quite expensive. In fact, you can clean your dog’s ears even alone, at home, saving time and money (as long as there are no serious diseases and infections).

The first step for proper ear cleaning is to  periodically check your pet. Observe any changes, check for objects or even a bad smell. In short, keep an eye on every part of your pet, especially if his ears are very crushed on the skull, as in the case of the Cocker Spaniel.

1. Check the condition of the ears

It is normal for you to notice a small amount of ear wax forming . What must be avoided is the excessive accumulation of dirt and dust in this delicate area. If you notice any yellow, gray or tan material, as well as blood (dry or not), take your pet to the vet. An inevitable choice, especially if the dog you have adopted has never received a general cleaning of the auditory system.

2. Check for foreign bodies

Parasites such as ticks try to occupy your dog’s ears as if it were their home. An area that is difficult for the animal to reach and that only you, the owners, can keep under control. If your dog goes out on the street, walks on the lawn or goes to his business near trees, it will also be normal to notice grass, flowers or seeds in his ears. In any case, any foreign body must be removed  gently.

3. Beware of bacterial or fungal infections

When a foreign body remains inside the ears, infections can occur. Beware of any bad smells as well as the presence of strange green or brown secretions. A special topical medication may be required. Cleaning alone will not solve the problem and indeed, in some cases, make things worse.

4. Use suitable products

In pet stores you will find many items designed for cleaning your dog’s ears. If you’re unwilling to shop, you can create a cleansing blend yourself. You will need the following ingredients:

  • alcohol
  • apple cider vinegar

Mix them in equal parts at room temperature and apply this household cleaner gently. Never use home remedies in case of infection or irritation, but contact your vet directly.

5. Use cotton and water

Many times a little warm water and cotton are enough to clean a dog’s ears. Rub slowly without applying too much pressure, but with enough force to remove dirt from the area. Two tips: calm the animal before the treatment and let him lie down comfortably, as well as use latex gloves for greater hygiene.

6. Don’t forget the outside areas

Once you have finished cleaning the innermost ears, move on to the outer zone. Use more cotton and clean water, always lukewarm. Be careful not to pull the skin too hard and never use alcohol or vinegar in case of injuries. Wait for these to heal in order to perform an effective cleaning.

6. Washing with water (if necessary)

Also after consulting your vet, it may be necessary to use water or a special liquid to remove excess earwax from your pet’s ears. Once the ear canal is wet, gently rub the base of the ear for one minute. With a gauze or a cotton swab you will then have to remove and clean the dirt that comes out.

7. Let the dog shake his head

At the end of the cleaning, your pet will want to shake their head to remove any liquid or dirt left in their ears. Leave it alone, because it is the best way to complete the cleanup. Step aside so you don’t get dirty and don’t forget to clean the room once the process is finished. It is advisable to carry out each operation in an open area of the house, such as the garden or the terrace.

8. Periodic cleaning

It is very important to schedule ear cleaning at least once a month. To keep in mind, you can create a reminder on your calendar or set an alarm on your mobile. Obviously, if your pet’s activity is particularly intense, at the park, on the beach or even in relation to the season,  the washing frequency will have to be higher.
