During the winter, with its low temperatures, it is useful to consider some tips to protect your animals. Here are some tricks to keep your dog from feeling cold during this season.

Tips for not making your dog feel cold in winter

Unless you have a Nordic dog, your furry friends are as affected by the drop in temperatures as people. You must have some precautions especially in these cases in particular:

• Small dogs
• Animals with little hair
• Many dogs are young, old, or sick (especially if they suffer from respiratory problems).

1- Get him a warm and comfortable place to sleep

If your dog usually sleeps indoors, he will certainly want to rest near a heat source. However, it is not ideal because he will feel the difference in temperature a lot when he goes to other areas of the house or when he has to go out for walks. So  place his bed away from the cold, with a cushion that doesn’t let him feel the dampness of the floor, and add a blanket too. 

In the event that your dog does not sleep indoors,  you must make sure that his kennel adequately protects him from the outside temperature. The materials it is made of will have to insulate it from cold, rain and humidity. To make this happen, the floor will need to be rubber or wood, and the walls and roof will need to contain polyurethane or fiberglass sheets.

2-Put him some capes or raincoats when you take him out

Sudden changes in temperature can contribute to making both people and animals sick. When you take him for a walk, you should make him wear capes to protect him from the cold. It doesn’t matter whether they are cute or trendy, the important thing is that the clothes you buy or create yourself are able to protect your friend from low temperatures.

If you add rain to the cold, put on a raincoat as well. Above all, make sure your dog is dry at the end of the walk. Another option is to have him wear shoes. However, some specialists only recommend them for animals that have delicate fingertips and that have to go on the snow.

3-Reduce the outputs

When the cold, rain and snow are abundant, the best thing is to let the dog out only to make him do his business. Although physical activity is very important for pets, you can replace outdoor activities with games for them to play indoors.

If you or your dog spend too much time in the weather, you could get sick or risk getting fungus or viruses. And it wouldn’t be ideal.

4-Do not cut the hair

Do not trim or shorten your dog’s coat when winter is approaching. The hair is one of the natural elements that the animal has to protect itself from the cold.

So no scissors, but keep his coat in good condition by brushing it often. And if you have to bathe him, do it inside the house, with the water at the right temperature and in a well-heated place.

5-Respect the vaccination schedule

Make sure you respect your dog’s vaccination schedule and that, during the winter, he is immune to cough  and tracheobronchitis. While it is not a serious disease, it can be difficult to cure. However, pay attention to the following symptoms:

• Cough
• High fever
• He retched
• Mucosity
